What Are the Pros and Cons of Implant-Supported Dentures?

Implant-supported dentures offer a more stable option than traditional dentures, with the ease of nightly removal for cleaning and gum/implant care. They are a strong option for patients who are looking for a secure fit but prefer something less costly than fixed dentures.

If you are sensitive to movement, implant-supported dentures may have minor movement due to their method of attachment to the gums. When discussing the options with your dentist, be sure to identify your primary goals and concerns to determine which solution will meet your needs and expectations.

How Do Implant-Supported Dentures Work?

Just as is indicated in the name, implant-supported dentures connect to the gum using 2-4 surgically implanted titanium screws called locators. The dentures snap onto these attachments and are removed nightly for cleaning both of the dentures and the implants.

After the implants are surgically placed, there is a 3-6 month healing period for the implant to fuse to the bone. This healing period is critical and post-operative instructions must be adhered to for the implants to be successful. Once full healing is complete, the denture is able to be connected to the locators and safely worn.
