Teeth aren’t just about a pretty smile – they also support proper nutrition & enjoyment of food.
Dentures and partials are both dental prosthetics used to replace a large number of consecutively missing teeth (such as an entire arch or quadrant). Traditional dentures and partials are not fixed appliances and can be removed for cleaning.
As compared to implant-supported dentures and fixed dentures, traditional dentures are the most cost-effective. That said, they do not offer the same level of chewing efficiency and there is a greater likelihood of bone loss than with the other denture types. A trusted dentist will assist you in determining which type of denture or partial is best for your lifestyle.
The short answer – yes, teeth are that important! Aside from the concerns associated with bone loss, teeth are critical for proper nutrition.
In order to eat without teeth, the diet must consist of soft, mushy foods and liquids. Many people on this type of diet do not have the variety of foods required to meet their nutritional needs such as adequate protein and vitamins and minerals that come from vegetables, fruit, and other nutritious foods.
There is also a social component to eating that may be avoided due to embarrassment or discomfort, potentially resulting in isolation and loneliness. Dentures can truly be life-changing!
A properly fitting denture should not need adhesive to hold it in place. If it fits loosely, it usually needs to be realigned. We recommend coming in at least once a year for a checkup and cleaning of your full denture. In between annual visits, proper and meticulous care of your dentures and gums is important. See our information sheet for our recommendations and guidelines for care.
