Get a smile you love with prosthetic teeth that look and feel like your own.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Fixed Dentures?

Fixed dentures are an outstanding solution to replace the full upper and/or lower arch for teeth. Not only do fixed dentures look and feel like natural teeth, but they also provide the most stability for chewing. Additionally, the palate (or roof of the mouth) is usually left open, enhancing taste.

Maintenance of fixed dentures is very similar to that of natural teeth – you brush and floss daily. Like implant-supported dentures, the risk of bone loss is reduced over traditional dentures thanks to the titanium implants placed in the jawbone.

Because they are not removed, fixed dentures do require specialized cleaning. They are also the most expensive of the denture options. Discussion of your lifestyle and goals will be important when determining which choice is best for your situation.

What Is the Procedure for Fixed Dentures?

Fixed dentures are placed using a multi-step procedure. Throughout the process, it is important that care instructions be adhered to so the implants have the greatest chance of success.

First, existing teeth will be extracted and the gums will be given time to heal. Next, the titanium implants (typically 4-6 individual implants) will be surgically placed in the jawbone. Once healing is complete (3-6 months for the implant to fuse to the bone), the fabricated denture will be placed on the implants. As you can see with the before and after image here, modern fixed dentures truly look like your natural teeth. They significantly improve function, and thereby, quality of life.
