Rebuild or Repair Bone Density

Strengthen the jaw with a safe surgical procedure.

What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is an in-office surgical procedure in which bone grafting material is added to the jawbone to rebuild or repair bone density and strengthen the jaw. The addition of the bone graft material can stimulate the body to regenerate natural bone tissue.

Bone density may be lost due to a variety of situations, including tooth extraction, injury, or periodontal disease. In some instances, bone grafting is done in preparation for procedures like dental implants and it can be used for ridge augmentation – restoring the natural contour of the gumline.

What Happens During a Bone Grafting Procedure?

During a bone grafting procedure, bone grafting material (either natural or synthetic) will be placed near the missing bone. This material may be one of 4 types:

Autografts – a graft from the patient’s bone

Allografts – natural material from a human donor

Xenografts – natural material from an animal

Alloplasts – synthetic, biocompatible (meaning the body should not reject it) bone graft material

The healing and integration process can take 3-6 months, during which time the body will hopefully respond by naturally regenerating the bone tissue. After that time, if the procedure was done in preparation for a dental implant, the next phase of the process may begin.
