Temporaries are for aesthetics only. Do not chew on the temporary crown. Chewing with a temporary over the implant will likely lead to failure.
If it feels like your teeth are touching the implant or the implant temporary, let us know immediately. Excessive initial forces may cause failure.
Only eat soft foods until instructed. Follow the handout guidelines closely. If you have front implants this may involve cutting up foods to avoid biting forces and chewing on the opposite side of the implant for back implants.
You may experience some soreness the following day. Most people (90%) have little to no pain from implant insertion. If a tooth was extracted you may have some discomfort. Ibuprofen is usually all that is needed for a day or two.
You may brush and floss, including brushing gently around the implant. A water-pick is recommended to maintain the implant site.
If a bone graft was done, avoid the area for several weeks. No vigorous rinsing or swishing for two days.
There should not be any bleeding from the implant area unless a tooth was removed. If a tooth was removed, do not disturb the blood clot (with your tongue, finger, fork, etc.).
Impressions for the implant crown can be taken immediately if necessary. However, we usually wait 2 weeks to make sure the implant is successful before a crown impression.
Expect approximately 6 weeks for the implant to start fusing to the bone and 12 weeks for significant fusion to the bone.
You usually won’t notice if an implant fails unless it feels loose. Do not push on the implant. If the implant fails it can usually be replaced at the same visit it is removed. However, in some cases we may need to wait, especially if you have not been on antibiotics.
